Aquatics Director

Title/Position: Aquatics Director (Seasonal)
Reports to: Camp Administration Team
Location: Camp Harbor View, Long Island, Boston MA (ferry transportation provided)
Hours: Seasonal, Full-Time; June 26, 2023 – August 25, 2023; 8:15 am to 4:45 pm
Responsibilities
- Manage the training, supervision, coaching, and scheduling of lifeguards, providing regular feedback through informal and formal observations and a performance evaluation twice per summer;
- Develop and implement a variety of developmentally appropriate activities, including swimming lessons, poolside activities, games in the event of rain, and collaborative programming across program areas and with program partners;
- Implement safety standards and regulations as outlined by the American Camp Association (ACA) Massachusetts Department of Health and Camp Harbor View;
- Manage communication with aquatics partners to ensure clear understanding of expectations and engagement with the camp community;
- Assist with the supervision and positive behavior guidance of campers participating in programming at the pool and across the camp community, including, but not limited to, performances, lunch, and the ferry;
- Coach and mentor high school-aged youth in the Leader in Training (LIT) program, regularly communicating with the LIT staff regarding the LIT’s job performance;
- Manage the budget, initial and end of season inventory, and security and maintenance of materials, equipment, and other resources belonging to the aquatics program area;
- Maintain a safe environment through constant surveillance of campers and staff in the water and on the pool deck or at the waterfront and adherence to state safety regulations and standards;
- Routinely lead and participate in safety drills to ensure familiarity with emergency procedures;
- Act immediately in the event of an emergency, using appropriate procedures to ensure the safety of campers and staff in the water and on the pool deck or at the waterfront;
- Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of medical personnel who can provide a higher level of care;
- Communicate with camp nurses to ensure appropriate documentation of all care given;
- Assess the swim levels of campers and staff and record initial levels and progress over the course of the summer on an electronic database that is shared among camp leadership;
- Check the water quality and chemical levels in the pool, maintaining appropriate levels, and communicate facility needs with the Facilities Manager when necessary;
- Serve as an ambassador to visitors, engaging them and articulating how the work serves the mission and the campers;
- Manage and ensure the maintenance and cleanliness of the pool, pool deck, and pool office;
- Manage program specific COVID-19 prevention and mitigation efforts; and
- Other duties that support the Camp Harbor View community as specified by the Camp Administration Team and other year-round leadership.
Qualifications
- 21+ years of age;
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Management certification (or equivalent);
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification (or equivalent);
- Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instruction (WSI) certification (or equivalent);
- Supervisory experience (6 weeks) required, experience in a camp setting preferred;
- Two seasons of previous lifeguard experience;
- Experience developing and delivering aquatics programs for youth;
- Interest in and knowledge of skills related to camp waterfront and pool activities;
- Interest in and knowledge of trends in swimming techniques and lifeguard training;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
- Ability to set up, adjust, and monitor physical equipment of a specialty area;
- Ability to supervise and teach middle school-aged youth;
- Ability to work with youth and families from a variety of backgrounds;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
